Kohima: The World War II Peace Rally, commemorating the historic Battle of Kohima, was held on December 2 at the WWII Museum Complex in Kisama Heritage Village.
The event brought together global and local dignitaries, with Mitchell Theaker, India Head of the Welsh Government and Partner Country Representative, serving as the chief guest.
The rally, an initiative envisioned by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, emphasised the role of history in promoting peace and fostering global harmony. Addressing the gathering, Abu Metha, Chairman of the Nagaland Olympic Association and Advisor to the Chief Minister, highlighted the significant contributions of the Naga people during WWII.
He said that the Naga history carries lessons of resilience and unity, urging the need to leverage this legacy to build bridges of peace and understanding. He also urged attendees to become ambassadors of Naga heritage and share their story with the world.
Chief guest Mitchell Theaker highlighted the deep historical ties between the Naga and Welsh communities, emphasising the need to preserve and strengthen this connection. He expressed hope that the rally would serve as a bridge of peace and goodwill, symbolizing unity amid a history of conflict.
In his address, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described the Battle of Kohima as a defining moment in Naga history. He underscored the devastation caused by war and the transformative power of peace, urging Nagaland to advocate peace not only within the state but also across neighboring regions and the global stage.
The Battle of Kohima, he said, is a testament to the resilience of the Naga people. He also reaffirmed the state government’s support for the Nagaland Flatfenders Club, which played a pivotal role in organising the event.
