Imphal: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Congress MP from Manipur, Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, from its services with immediate effect following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment made by at least 11 female students.
Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, previously served as a professor at JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences before entering active politics.
According to the dismissal order signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, the university’s Internal Committee (IC) conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recommended major disciplinary action against Akoijam after examining the available facts.
The order stated that, following due process and consideration of the IC’s report, the university had imposed the punishment of dismissal from service with immediate effect.
The order read, “The punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences of the University, with immediate effect.”
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur unit has demanded Akoijam’s resignation as a Member of Parliament, stating that he had lost the moral authority to continue serving the people.
