Silchar: Police arrested a man for allegedly attacking his friend with a machete and attempting to kill him in Joykrishnapur Bazar, Lala, located in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Monday. The arrested individual, Rashid Ahmed Barbhuiya, reportedly acted out of revenge against his friend, Abul Hossain, whom he claimed had publicly slapped him in Mumbai around ten years ago, as per statements Rashid provided to the police.
According to information gathered from various sources, the incident occurred on Monday morning. Rashid, a resident of Sheralipur, Joykrishnapur, reportedly contacted Abul, also a resident of the same village, inviting him to go for a ride.
Abul agreed, and the two traveled to Joykrishnapur Bazar on a two-wheeler. Once they arrived, Rashid, who was riding as the pillion, allegedly drew a machete and attacked Abul from behind, causing critical injuries.
Witnesses at the scene quickly intervened, gathering around and rushing Abul to the Lala Primary Health Centre. They apprehended Rashid and alerted the police to the situation. A police team soon arrived at the location and took Rashid into custody.
In the presence of onlookers, Rashid reportedly admitted that he had wanted to kill Abul as an act of vengeance for being publicly slapped over an issue in Mumbai a decade ago.
Police recovered the machete from Rashid’s possession and arranged for Abul to be transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for further treatment. Meanwhile, Abul’s wife filed an FIR against Rashid at the Abullapur police outpost, under the jurisdiction of Lala police station.
Speaking to reporters, she expressed shock at the attack, stating she never expected Rashid to attempt to kill her husband, and demanded strict action be taken against him.
Residents of Sheralipur revealed that Abul and Rashid had initially traveled to Mumbai years ago in search of work to support their families financially.
Abul returned to the village a few years ago and established a grocery shop, while Rashid only recently returned to the area.
