Pragjyotishpur University, a prominent institution in Assam, is set to host the North-Eastern and Eastern Zone Vice Chancellors Conference on 28 June 2024. The conference, organised in collaboration with the University Grants Commission (UGC), will focus on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Nagaland University will act as the lead coordinator for this event.
The conference will see the participation of 423 delegates, including vice-chancellors and academic leaders from around 140 universities in the region. This significant gathering aims to advance the implementation of NEP 2020, which is expected to have a transformative impact on the education system in these regions.
The event will be inaugurated by Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Assam, with the presence of Ranoj Pegu, Education Minister of Assam, Rakkam A Sangma, Education Minister of Meghalaya, and Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman of UGC.
The conference will feature group discussions on ten critical themes:
- Multidisciplinary and Holistic Education
- Digital Empowerment and Online Education
- Skill Development and Employability
- Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- Capacity Building of Teachers for Quality Education
- Governance & Autonomy
- Accreditation and Excellence
- Equitable and Inclusive Education
- Indian Knowledge System & Indian Languages
- Internationalisation of Education
Delegates will engage in brainstorming sessions on these themes, sharing ideas and strategies for the effective implementation of NEP 2020.

Additionally, the Chairman of UGC will interact with NEP Saarthis, who are serving as ambassadors for NEP implementation at their respective universities. Representatives from state higher education councils, the Department of Education under state governments, and members of the media will also participate in these interactions.
Prof Joesh Kakati, Registrar of Pragjyotishpur University, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the conference. “We recognise the importance of NEP 2020, and our stakeholders are eager to see its implementation across these regions. We hope to facilitate important debates on policymaking and advocacy around NEP 2020, which will benefit educational institutions in Assam and its neighbouring regions in the long run, ultimately serving thousands of students, teachers, and key decision-makers in the educational system,” he stated.
