Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Arjun Munda, virtually inaugurated the Administrative-cum-academic Building, Manas Guest House, Subansiri Girls Hostel and Brahmaputra Boys Hostel of Indian Agricultural Research Institute – Indian Council of Agricultural Research (IARI-ICAR), at Dhemaji in Assam today.
In his virtual address, Munda highlighted the efforts of the Union Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in bridging the gaps in the development of agriculture in the North-Eastern States and bringing the sector into the mainstream. He emphasised the role of agricultural institutions in driving the sector forward through multifaceted efforts and expressed confidence that IARI will emerge as a crucial focal point for agricultural research and development in the Northeastern region.
The minister noted that IARI has been offering Masters Courses in various disciplines since 2015-16 and stressed the need to cultivate a commitment among students to not only become agricultural experts but also excel as multi-billionaires in the agro sector.
Union Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Kailash Choudhary, also graced the occasion and urged scientists to explore the rich natural diversity present in the Northeast region. He emphasised the importance of research in pulses and oilseeds.
Dr Himansu Pathak, Secretary DARE and DG ICAR, New Delhi, virtually addressed the gathering and elaborated on the objectives and mandates of IARI, Assam. He underscored the need to harness the immense potential of North-East India through research and development.

Dr Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Education, Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, Government of Assam, lauded the efforts of IARI, Assam, and highlighted the potential of its research work in enhancing plant, animal, and fish diversity while contributing to environmental conservation.
The event was also attended by Pradan Baruah, MP (Lakhimpur); Dr A.K. Singh, Director, IARI; Ankur Bharali, District Commissioner, Dhemaji; and several scientists from IARI-ICAR.
