Meghalaya tourism minister questions opposition to Shillong ropeway project

Shillong: NPP leader and Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira has questioned the opposition to the proposed Shillong ropeway project, alleging that the protests are politically driven and sponsored.

Shira raised concerns over the timing of the objections, asking why the issue had gained momentum only after the project had progressed.

He also questioned the KHADC, led by the VPP, for intervening in the matter and sealing the project site, stating that there had been no major resistance when the project was first initiated.

He argued that objections should have been raised at the initial stage if there were concerns over the project. On the question of public consultation, Shira said a public hearing and notification must have been conducted, while clarifying that he was not directly involved in the process.
