Guwahati: The New Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh workshops under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) recorded a significant increase in the maintenance of train coaches and goods wagons.
Both workshops achieved remarkable milestones in their maintenance outturn during the month of February this year, highlighting their dedication to providing a comfortable travel experience for passengers and ensuring operational safety.
During February, the New Bongaigaon workshop exceeded expectations by conducting Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) of 64 sets of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) and ICF (Conventional Type) trolleys, surpassing the target of 50 sets per month.

Additionally, Periodical Overhauling (POH) of 55 coaches, including 27 LHB and 28 ICF coaches, was completed, along with the outturn of 206 wheel sets from the wheel lathe.
The workshop also converted 154 wagons and 06 brake vans, including the conversion of 12 trolleys of 06 wagons into high-speed trolleys. Furthermore, 46 wagons were upgraded to twin-pipe air brake systems for enhanced braking efficiency.
Similarly, the Dibrugarh workshop achieved significant milestones during the same period, conducting periodical maintenance of 33 LHB coaches and 34 ICF coaches, exceeding the target of 20 LHB coaches and 30 ICF coaches.
The POH outturn for conventional coaches reached 67, surpassing the target of 50 coaches for the month. The workshop also overhauled 614 wheel sets, comprising 355 LHB and 259 ICF sets.

In an effort to enhance fire safety measures, 19 LHB AC coaches were equipped with Fire Detection Systems, and modifications were made to the air brake systems of 15 coaches.
Furthermore, the scrap disposal by the Dibrugarh workshop in February 2024 amounted to 322.70 MT, representing a remarkable increase of almost 160% compared to January 2024.

The maintenance and repair of train coaches and goods wagons in these workshops are conducted according to prescribed schedules, as per a railway official.
Both workshops have undertaken infrastructure augmentation works to refurbish LHB coaches and increase their POH capacity. Additionally, they regularly conduct Intermediate Overhauling and Periodical Overhauling of train coaches to ensure their optimal performance and safety.
