Agartala: Six individuals have been booked under various sections of the BNS for inciting communal tension in Kailashahar, the headquarters of Unakoti district in Tripura.
The accused are allegedly responsible for an attempt to set fire to a mosque, where some carpets stored in the complex caught fire, leading to heightened tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities that have coexisted peacefully in the area for decades.
The incident was portrayed as an attack by the majority Hindu community, resulting in escalating communal tension.
To manage the situation, the administration issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNS, which were later withdrawn after normalcy was restored through several rounds of peace meetings.
The police have registered a specific case naming the six individuals. “We arrested one person, identified as Akash Uddin, on October 19. He has been in police custody since then. The other five may have fled, but we are working to trace them as quickly as possible,” said a police spokesperson.
Akash Uddin is considered one of the key accused in the arson incident.
Meanwhile, two accused, Abdul Ahad and Abdul Jalil, reportedly crossed into Bangladesh to evade arrest but were detained by the Border Guards of Bangladesh.
“We have seen media reports in Bangladeshi outlets regarding the arrest of these two individuals, who are linked to the conspiracy to incite communal tension here. The photographs published by those outlets confirm their identities. However, we have yet to receive any formal update on their deportation,” OC Arunaday Das of Irani Police Station told EastMojo.
The officer also mentioned that three additional accused are still at large. “We are leaving no stone unturned to apprehend them,” he added.
