Agartala: Director General of Police Tripura Amitabh Ranjan on Monday dismissed the allegations of law and order breakdown in the state and stated that his force had been given ‘free hand’ to act against nefarious elements trying to disrupt peace.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the Police Commemoration Parade held at Manoranjan Debbarma memorial police reserve field, Ranjan said, “I have noticed that some vested interest groups are actively trying to show Tripura Police in a bad light. But, the data portrays a starkly different picture. We have analysed the crime data of the last ten years, and in all major heads the lowest number of crimes had been reported this year. Be it offences against body, property related dispute or any other crime.”
Citing the recent elections, he said, “The elections had been conducted peacefully in Tripura which should be seen as a big achievement. All the VVIP visits that have happened in recent times have seen no disruption. All these are indicators of good policing.”
Referring to the places where communal tension flared recently, the top cop said, “Even in places where some incidents occurred lately, Durga Puja was celebrated very peacefully. People from all communities joined the festive vibrant celebrations. This has become possible because of the police’s relentless efforts.”
On being asked about the recent cases of custodial torture leading to death of an individual, he said, “On behalf of the whole police force, I admit that in some cases our people also make mistakes. But, you have to notice the reaction from the top. The Chief Minister has instructed us very clearly that we have to act strongly against all offenders. The police officials involved in wrongdoings had been removed from their posts. We have sent them to jail. We have free hands to act against all elements that are against peace.”
