Agartala: The Power Department of Tripura has decided to procure 105 megawatt additional power to meet the demand during Durga Puja days across the state. According to early estimates a sum of Rs 2 crore is required for this purpose, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Monday.
Briefing the media persons on his department’s preparedness to deal with the growing demand of power during the festive season, Nath said that the state would also cut short its supply to Bangladesh to maintain adequate power stock during the festive days.
“Last year the peak demand was 311.3 MW, recorded on the day of Maha Astami. The total power required on that day was 436.1 MW including the supply to Bangladesh. So far, 378.5 MW was the highest peak recorded on September 20 and the average consumption for the current year stands at 330 MW. In view of this, our projected highest consumption for a day during Durga Puja stands at 390 MW. In view of Puja, we shall also restrict our supply to Bangladesh. On an average 71 MW power is supplied to Bangladesh but for Puja we shall only give 50 MW,” Nath said.
According to Nath, to maintain availability of power during the festival days, the state will procure 105 MW power.

“We get 255 MW power as central share. From Rukhia we get 19 MW power and Monarchak supplies 61 MW. For additional requirements, we can buy up to 80 MW from Mizoram and OTPC. The rest of 25 MW power would be sourced from open market or power exchange. For purchasing the additional power, we will have to spend rupees two crore.”
To a question related to the Power Trade deal with Bangladesh, Nath said, “Tripura supplies 71.8 MW power to Bangladesh through National Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN). As per the latest financial reports, the state has an outstanding of Rs 188 crore which is yet to be cleared by Bangladesh. The trade is mediated by NVVN. The state gets paid from NVVN and there is no direct communication between the Bangladesh and Tripura governments on power trade.”
