Agartala: In a shocking incident, the half-burnt body of a 52-year-old woman was found tied to a tree in the Champaknagar area of West Tripura District late Saturday night. Police have arrested her two sons and brother-in-law in connection with the gruesome murder, according to officials speaking to EastMojo.
The victim, identified as Minati Debnath, lived in a joint family with her two sons and daughter-in-law. Local sources reported that the family’s house is situated far from the main locality, leaving neighbors unaware of any disturbances or quarrels on the day of the incident.
A local youth first discovered the body tied to the tree and alerted the police. A team led by SDPO Jirania Kamal Krishna Kaloi, OC Champaknagar Outpost Sanjay Debbarma, and OC Jirania Police Station Raju Datta arrived at the scene, along with forensic teams and a dog squad.
“The remains were later sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination,” a police official said.
The investigating officer stated that the cause of death is still undetermined. “We cannot confirm yet whether the woman was burned alive or if her body was set on fire post-mortem. The initial autopsy report will provide more clarity. So far, we have arrested her two sons, Ranabir Debnath and Biplab Debnath, as well as her late husband’s younger brother, Lakshman Debnath. They will be produced in court on Monday,” he told EastMojo.
