Agartala: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura has enrolled 2.6 lakh members till September 12.
The exercise began on September 3 last with Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha renewing his membership, BJP Tripura Pradesh President and newly elected Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee has said.
“The memberships are collected in both online and offline mode. According to our party norms, every six years, a membership drive is conducted all over the country. In a period of ten days, we have been able to collect 2,60,000 memberships across the state. BJP State General Secretary and MLA Bhagaban Das have been assigned with the task of supervising the exercise. For all assembly constituencies, we have sent leaders to accelerate the drive so that we can meet the target,” Bhattacharjee told media persons on Saturday.
Accusing the opposition parties of spoiling the decorum of parliamentary politics, Bhattacharjee trained his guns on CPIM and Congress for stooping to a new low in order to target the BJP-led coalition government.
“We believe the opposition parties act as a mirror to the government. We welcome constructive criticism. But, making sweeping allegations sans any evidence just to mislead the people is uncalled for. We have noticed that some leaders had audaciously indulged in unparliamentary practices to target the government. Our government has maintained transparency at levels yet we are being accused of corruption,” Bhattacharjee claimed.
Playing down the allegations, he said, “When Left and Congress were in power, corruption was a common feature of the governance. Multiple scams were unearthed and investigations were conducted. Media reports are still available in the public domain.”

To justify his statement, Bhattacharjee also waved some old media reports of a vernacular daily.
Apart from that, the BJP leader also informed the media persons that the 15-day window of September 17 to October 02 would be observed with multiple events across the state. “The birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi falls on September 17. Between September 17 to October 02, birth anniversaries of Jan Sangh ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Mahatma Gandhi would also be observed in a befitting manner,” he added.
