Agartala: A 21-year-old youth died mysteriously after an unsuccessful elopement bid with his 18-year-old lover. The incident occurred at Chelagang in Amarpur subdivision under the Gomati District of Tripura.
The family members of the deceased—identified as Goutam Das—alleged that he was thrashed inhumanly by the police which eventually led to his death.
Speaking on the issue, SDPO Amarpur Debanjali Roy said, “On September 08, the deceased and his lover eloped together. The family members of the girl identified as Purnima Banik (18) lodged a missing complaint with the Natunbazar police station on the same night.
Police could trace their locations within very short notice and pick them up from the Harina area of South Tripura district. Both of them were brought back to Natunbazar police station on September 09 morning.”
According to police, after the recovery of the girl, the case was withdrawn and the family members of the girl refused to take any legal action against the boy.
“The girl and the boy went to their respective homes with their parents as none of the parties were eager to file any police case. But, on Wednesday, we received information that the boy involved in the case passed away. We went to the spot and convinced the family members to allow a post-mortem examination of the mortal remains. Accordingly, a panel of four doctors conducted the examination in the presence of an executive magistrate,” Roy told EastMojo.
Local sources said that the boy was subjected to brutal torture in police lock up and later he was again thrashed in a local arbitration meeting convened on Monday.
According to a family member of the deceased, he was brought to Natunbazar police station early in the morning wherein he was subjected to physical torture. On Monday, a meeting was convened by the elders of the village where he was once again thrashed publicly for attempting to marry the girl against the wish of her parents.
The attacks inflicted severe injuries on different parts of his body. He was admitted to the local hospital for treatment and later referred to GB Pant Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday.
A delegation of principal opposition CPIM’s youth wing DYFI rushed to Amarpur on Thursday. The activists of the opposition party met the police officials and bereaved family as well.

“The family members have alleged that he was tortured in the police station the day they were brought back from Sabroom. On Monday, he faced another round of physical assault by the local BJP leaders. The chairman of the village committee called the family for an arbitration meeting at his house. The severe physical assault became the reason for his unfortunate death,” DYFI state secretary Nabarun Deb told EastMojo.
The CPIM has also demanded justice for the innocent boy who was killed just because he wanted to marry the girl whom he loved.
