Dr Manik Saha interacting with a rickshaw puller as he particpated in the BJP's poll campaign

Agartala: The opposition parties have resorted to personal vilification of the BJP candidates as they are left with no poll issues against the ruling Party, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said on Saturday.

Asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party reserved the right to assign responsibilities to its leaders, Dr Saha said, “The opposition parties are not in the position to contest the polls on real issues. We don’t see ourselves as leaders. We are all messengers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and under his guidance, we are carrying out these public contact drives.

We have a report card of our performance. We are telling people that for the last ten years, the Centre has done this much for you and the state has supplemented the development with additional work.”

The Chief Minister was speaking in response to a question on the opposition party’s critical reaction to the candidature of Mayor Dipak Majumder and Kriti Singh Debbarma.

Soon after the BJP declared the names of the candidates, opposition leaders claimed that Kriti Singh Debbarman didn’t belong to Tripura. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury even asked as to why Mayor Dipak Majumder is being removed from such a high position to fight by-elections.

“Kriti Singh Debbarman is a daughter of Tripura’s royal family. If this isn’t right how come she uses the surname Debbarman? And, for Mayor Dipak Majumder, he has performed well in his responsibilities and now the party has decided that he should be fielded as a candidate for the Ramnagar. The real fact is that the opposition has no issue left which is why their campaign involves a lot of prejudiced statements,” Dr Saha explained while interacting with media persons during poll campaign at Ramnagar.

On being asked about the INDIA alliance, he said, “First of all, this is not the INDIA alliance. The accurate acronym is INDI Alliance. Many people have already deserted the alliance and in the days to come more people will leave. For instance, in West Bengal, there is no alliance.”

The Chief Minister also described the opposition as migratory birds who venture out in poll season. “In contrast, our workers are on the field 365 days a year. We seek votes based on the work we have done, unlike the opposition who seek votes to protect their existence. You must have seen how ED is taking action against the corrupt leaders,” said Dr Saha.
