Kohima: The TechFusion Club of Nagaland University’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET), Kohima Campus, Meriema, organised a hands-on workshop on drone technology on September 30, providing 31 students with practical exposure to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electronics and embedded systems.

The workshop, titled “Hands-on Experience with Drone Components”, was held at the SET Building and aimed to help students understand the basic components, flight principles and electronic systems involved in drone technology.

Participants were introduced to the construction of brushless drones, including frames, brushless motors, Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs) and batteries. They also learned about the design of a coreless mini drone equipped with a motor driver, an ESP32-based flight controller and an MPU6050 accelerometer and gyroscope.

The session covered the basic principles of drone flight, including throttle, yaw, pitch and roll, and demonstrated how these controls affect the movement and stability of a drone.

Students also used PICA Sim, a virtual flight simulator, to practise drone controls in a controlled environment before working with physical equipment. The practical sessions included demonstrations involving ESP32 and MPU6050-based systems, remote controllers, multimeters, batteries and buck converters.

In another hands-on exercise, half of the participants assembled a motor driver circuit using a MOSFET, flyback diode and resistor, giving them practical experience in basic electronic circuit construction.

The workshop was designed to connect concepts from electronics, programming, mechanics and control systems, while also introducing students from non-electronics backgrounds to embedded systems and UAV technology.

The programme was coordinated by Rishab Misra, BTech (CSE), and Ravi Kumar Sah, BTech (IT). Club Mentor Shanchamo Yanthan thanked Nagaland University Pro Vice Chancellor Prof N Venuh and Dean of NU-SET Prof Sujata Dash for their support and encouragement.

Yanthan also encouraged students to participate in club activities to develop their technical skills, creativity and innovation. The TechFusion Club said it plans to organise more practical and interdisciplinary activities focusing on technical learning, robotics, innovation and emerging technologies.
