Shillong: Meghalaya Police is preparing a detailed security and traffic management plan for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to the state, with around 15 companies of security personnel expected to be deployed across Shillong.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said preparations were underway at multiple locations in the city, with traffic advisories to be issued ahead of the visit to help commuters plan their movement.

The advisories will identify roads to avoid and provide details of the timings of traffic restrictions.

“We will ensure that there is not much holding of vehicles,” Syiem said, adding that traffic would be stopped only for the required period during the movement of the VVIP convoy.

He said prolonged stoppage of vehicles could create congestion and increase the possibility of accidents, while police would also have to follow security protocols applicable to the VVIP.

“Only for a certain time when the car comes and moves, then the huge number of vehicles and all that. If we allow vehicles at that time, they could lead to a possible accident,” he said.

Syiem said coordination among personnel deployed on the roads would be crucial to ensure smooth movement during the visit.

“We’ll have to ensure that there is proper communication, there is proper synergy between all policemen who are on the road,” he said.

Shah is scheduled to visit Meghalaya on October 5 for the presentation of the President’s Police Colour to the Meghalaya Police.

According to Syiem, the Union Home Minister will confer the honour on the state police in recognition of its performance and service.

He said Meghalaya is among the few northeastern states to have received the President’s Police Colour, making the occasion significant for the state police.

The event is expected to be attended by Village Defence Party (VDP) members, students, other stakeholders and invited guests.

Syiem appealed to the public to cooperate with the traffic arrangements, saying police would keep restrictions to the minimum necessary while maintaining the required security protocols.

Shah will arrive in Shillong on October 4. The scheduled programme on October 5 will begin at 9 am and conclude at 11 am.
