Agartala: The social welfare and social education department of Tripura has suspended Anganwadi Centre (AWC) In-charge Jaylaxmi Sarkar (Debbarma) after reports of a tragic incident due to alleged negligence in duty surfaced.
Two preschool goers enrolled with the centre suffered burn injuries after boiling-hot water was thrown on them by the kitchen assistant of the centre.
The incident occurred at Bairagumura Anganwadi Centre located at Melaghar under Sepahijala district. As soon as the news reached Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, he took swift action and ordered the suspension of the AWC in charge. She would be placed under suspension until the inquiry initiated to find out the truth behind the incident was completed.
Apart from that, the minister has also met the children now admitted at GBP Hospital Agartala. A sum of Rs 30,000 instant cash assistance was provided to the affected families and they were assured that further financial assistance would be provided based on the needs of the treatment, a press statement from the minister’s office reads.
The inquiry order passed by Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Mohanbhog Hiralal Debbarma stated that the probe should be completed within two working days.
“The Sector Supervisor of Telkajla Sector Smt. Anita Burman, Sri Debayan Chowdhury (Supervisor) & Sri Bishu Kumar Debbarma (Supervisor) have been tasked with visiting the Anganwadi Center to speak with local parents’ along with the members of the Anganwadi Center Management Committee. A thorough investigation is to be conducted and a report detailing the findings is to be submitted to the undersigned authorities within two days,” the inquiry order reads.
