Agartala: The opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Congress in Tripura have voiced strong criticism against the Central government for notifying the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Leaders from the CPI-M and Congress alleged that the decision to notify the CAA rules was aimed at garnering undue political advantage from the polarization that would take place soon after the contentious act comes into effect ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
Leader of the Opposition designate and CPIM state secretary Jitendra Choudhury claimed that the law was against the spirit of the Indian constitution.
“It is not in line with the spirit of the Constitution. The timing of issuing the notification before the Parliamentary polls was to mobilize their vote bank through communal polarization.” He added.
He also assured that the CPI-M would raise this issue during their party’s election campaign.
Ashish Kumar Saha, President of the Tripura unit of Congress and candidate for the Tripura West Lok Sabha seat, criticized the notification of CAA rules as a political tactic to divert public attention.
Saha reiterated Congress’s opposition to both CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and stated that his party would always stand against laws that divide people on religious grounds.
