GBP hospital doctors in weekly press briefing at Agartala Government Medical College.

Agartala: Senior cardiologist of GBP hospital Anindya Sundar Trivedi on Thursday said that most complex cardiovascular medical procedures are now possible in the Tripura’s prime referral hospital’s super specialty block.

Speaking at the hospital’s weekly press briefing, Dr Trivedi said, “In the last two months we have conducted around 120 cardiac procedures in the hospital which includes around 30 to 35 cases of angioplasty. Angiography, stenting, and pace-maker implantation are some of the medical remedies that GBP hospital is providing at a minimal cost.”

Dr Tripathi also appealed to the patients who migrate outside the state in search of advanced treatment and end up spending a lot on “out of pocket expenditure” to keep faith in the medical infrastructure of Tripura which is growing at a rapid pace.

Dr Rakesh Das, also a member of the cardiology team of the GBP hospital said that apart from heart-related problems, peripheral angioplasty is also now possible in the state. “Peripheral angioplasty is yet another costly affair in private medical institutions,” explained Dr Das. He cited a two-month-old case where a patient with acute pain in her legs arrived at the hospital.

“After diagnosis, we found that her arteries in the legs blocked. Her condition reached such an extreme point that had she not been provided timely treatment, both of her legs would have been turned inactive. The only option in that scenario is to cut them off from the body. However, timely medical intervention brought her legs back to life. Her complaints of leg pain are now a thing of the past,” Das added.

According to him, for the last two months the female patient is keeping well. Dr Trivedi also informed the media persons that treatment of “hole in the heart” which is called Ventricular septal defect (VSD) in medical terms is also treatable in the hospital without any surgery. “Open heart surgery is not required for all heart-related complications. We have started device surgery which can cure some problems sans any surgical procedure,” he added.
