The Indian men’s football team, still seeking its first win under head coach Manolo Marquez, is set to face Malaysia in an international friendly on 18 November at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium, as confirmed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Wednesday. Initially scheduled for 19 November, the match date was adjusted to the 18th, with the venue now officially selected. Falling in the final FIFA international match window of 2024, the fixture will allow Marquez full access to players as clubs are required to release them for national duty.
This upcoming friendly will mark Marquez’s fourth match at the helm, following a series of challenging games that included a draw with Mauritius and losses to Syria and Vietnam. These initial results have underscored the need for adaptation and consistency, as the team works to build cohesion under the guidance of their new coach. Their upcoming fixture against Malaysia will provide Marquez another opportunity to fine-tune his squad’s approach, with the goal of breaking his winless streak.
The Gachibowli Stadium, recently the stage for the Intercontinental Cup in September, is a familiar ground for India. The national side struggled in that tournament, securing only a goalless draw against Mauritius and later losing to Syria, who went on to claim the title with a 3-0 win over India. India’s most recent outing, a 1-1 draw against Vietnam in October, showcased the team’s potential but left room for improvement as they failed to clinch a win.

India’s current FIFA ranking of 125, while marginally higher than Malaysia’s 133, highlights the competitive nature of the upcoming match. Malaysia will enter the game with confidence, having defeated India 4-2 in their last meeting during the Merdeka Cup semifinal in October 2023.
