Gangtok: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed rainfall during the Dusshera festival in Sikkim, with officials issuing a thunderstorm advisory as festive celebrations approach.
“Showers are not just likely but they will occur during Dusshera,” said Gopinath Raha, Director of the IMD, on Friday. “The current warm spell will ease, and by the festival, temperatures will definitely drop. Residents and tourists should be prepared for both rainfall and thunderstorms.”
Gangtok has been experiencing above-normal temperatures since September 23, with a recent high of 26.6°C, while Tadong area recorded 31.3°C, the highest of the month so far. Raha explained that a series of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal is pulling moisture into the region, setting the stage for widespread rain.
According to the IMD, clear skies will dominate mornings until September 30, but by October 1, clouds will thicken, and from October 2 onwards, rainfall will intensify across the state. Heavy showers are expected to continue for four to five days, covering the peak of Dusshera festivities.
“Thunderstorm activity ranging from moderate to heavy will be frequent,” Raha cautioned. “Even on days when the sky appears blue, sudden passing showers are developing. With large public gatherings during the festival, we urge people to follow advisories and take precautions.”
Despite the recent dry phase, Sikkim’s overall rainfall deficit remains around minus 9%, which is considered near normal. The IMD has advised residents and visitors to plan travel and outdoor celebrations carefully to avoid disruption from the certain rainfall and thunderstorms during the Dusshera period.
