Aizawl: Improving access to palliative care in the region’s difficult and geographically remote areas will be a key focus of the newly established North East Regional Chapter of the Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC).
The chapter, inaugurated on September 12, brings together healthcare professionals and institutions from all eight Northeastern states. It aims to address gaps in palliative care delivery, strengthen professional training and encourage greater community involvement.
Dr. Raj Prabha Moktan, Director, Regional Resource Centre for North East, a branch of National Health Systems Resource Centre, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of india, inaugurated the Chapter as Chief Guest in the gracious presence of Dr. Geeta Joshi, National President, IAPC. The formal inauguration was preceded by a day-long academic programme and leadership meeting at PA Sang-ma Medical College & Hospital, Me-ghalaya, with representation from all eight Northeastern states.

One of the chapter’s priorities is to improve financial support for home-based palliative care. Long distances, challenging terrain and limited healthcare access often make regular hospital visits difficult for patients and their families.
The regional body also plans to expand training for doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, while developing specialist expertise and strengthening partnerships with government agencies and healthcare institutions.
The chapter’s executive committee has members from all eight Northeastern states. Dr Sanghamitra Bora of Assam has been appointed president, while Dr Tashi Chotton of Arunachal Pradesh will serve as honorary secretary and Rontu Sangma of Meghalaya as treasurer.
