Aizawl: Hindi Diwas was observed in Mizoram on Monday along with the rest of the country, with Greenhill Public School, Aizawl, organising a Hindi Concert at Vanapa Hall to mark the occasion.
Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), attended the event as the chief guest, while Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana was the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Vijay Kumar Singh stressed the importance of learning Hindi as part of educational transformation, while emphasising that such transformation must remain rooted in cultural values and traditions.
He said Mizoram has abundant talent that should be showcased beyond the state, including across the country and on the global stage. He encouraged students to learn additional languages, noting that proficiency in other languages could benefit them in education, employment, business and tourism.
“Mistakes are inevitable while learning a language, but one must not fear them, for it is through errors that true learning takes place,” he said.
The Governor welcomed the Mizoram government’s initiative to introduce a monthly Hindi-speaking day in schools. He also urged students to learn about the cultures, traditions and languages of other communities, read widely and develop a deeper understanding of India’s history.
Highlighting the importance of preserving cultural identity, he said students must develop the confidence to compete at national and international levels without losing their own language, culture, traditions and heritage.
He further observed that academic excellence alone was not sufficient in a rapidly changing world and called upon students to develop knowledge, skills, good character, confidence, discipline, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards society and the nation.
Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana said India’s linguistic diversity made language learning particularly important. He noted that proficiency in Hindi, spoken by a large section of the country’s population, could facilitate communication and professional interactions with people from different regions.
However, he emphasised that Hindi can be learnt and used effectively without compromising Mizo culture, traditions and values.
The Minister said language learning in modern education should not be limited to examinations but should place greater emphasis on actual spoken proficiency.
Referring to the recommendations of the Mizoram Education Reform Committee, Dr Vanlalthlana said the committee had recommended the introduction of a “one day a month Hindi-speaking day” in schools. Guidebooks had already been issued and implementation was underway, he said.
