Gangtok: Sikkim University has cancelled the admission of Raj Shekhar Yadav, a first-semester M.Com student from Uttar Pradesh, after he was found guilty of posting derogatory and indecent remarks against the Nepali language and community in the official WhatsApp group of the Commerce Department between August 14 and 16.
According to the university’s office order issued on Thursday, the Disciplinary Committee concluded that Yadav violated the code of conduct by making objectionable comments about the Nepali language and questioning the observance of Independence Day.
His remarks, which the Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) described as divisive and insulting, triggered outrage among students and faculty and even led to police intervention under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
Registrar (In-charge) Laxuman Sharma, in the order, stated that on the recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee, the Vice-Chancellor exercised powers under Statute 29 (4) of the Sikkim University Act and Ordinance OC-12 to cancel Yadav’s provisional admission with immediate effect.
