Gangtok: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has alleged that the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) led state government has been violating the model code of conduct, enforced by the announcement of the poll schedule.
According to SDF, the State Department of Personnel issued job offers and memorandums for regularisation at a time when the model code of conduct (MCC) was in effect. The party asserted that the move was a sheer violation of election norms.
In a meeting with the election commission of the state, the SDF brought forth several instances of MCC violations by the ruling party.
Speaking to the media outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, SDF leader Prem Das Rai said, “Despite the model code of conduct coming into force on March 16, the government and the SKM party are disregarding it. The Department of Personnel is still issuing job orders retroactively, which is a clear violation of MCC. While we have no issue with the individuals receiving these orders, the process itself is unlawful, and we want to bring it to the attention of the Chief Electoral Officer.”
Rai, a former two-time Lok Sabha MP, further pointed out: “MLAs are also engaging in meetings with youth and distributing job orders, which must cease immediately. Additionally, other departments, such as irrigation, are issuing work orders, also violating the MCC. Furthermore, chairpersons and advisors should surrender their vehicles.”
The SDF reiterated its demand for the President’s rule in the state, citing instances of violence that have shaken public trust in the law and order situation.
Rai highlighted incidents like the attack on Keshav Sapkota in 2023 and the recent murder of student leader Padam Gurung as evidence of deteriorating security.
The SDF also addressed the categorization of the Sangha seat as a general seat, expressing confidence that the issue would be resolved promptly.
Rai criticized the Sub Divisional Magistrates and Assistant District Magistrates for targeting only SDF cadres, alleging bias and partiality in their actions. He emphasized the need for fair treatment and urged voters to reject the current government.
Regarding election regulations, Rai pointed out violations such as SKM party hoardings and banners featuring Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, which should be removed promptly to ensure a level playing field for all parties.
Speaking on the matter of electoral bonds, the SDF vice president clarified the party’s stance, highlighting recent Supreme Court rulings.
He called for transparency regarding the use of funds, particularly questioning the SKM party’s finances during critical events like the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood.
