The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced that starting January 2025, all passenger trains under its jurisdiction will revert to their original numbering system, restoring the system that was in place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision, approved by the Railway Board, will apply to all NFR-operated trains, including ICF, DEMU, and LHB models.
The current temporary numbering system, which begins with ‘0’, will be discontinued. As a result, 60 pairs of passenger trains will operate with their pre-pandemic train numbers and follow their previous schedules and frequencies.
The operation of the 60 pairs of trains is distributed across five divisions of the NFR:
- Tinsukia Division: 4 pairs of trains, including the Simaluguri Jn.–Dibrugarh–Simaluguri Jn. (55909/55910) and Makum Jn.–Dangari–Makum Jn. (75904/75905).
- Lumding Division: 19 pairs of trains, such as the Guwahati–Mairabari–Guwahati (55603/55604) and Dullabcherra–Silchar–Dullabcherra (55687/55688).
- Rangiya Division: 10 pairs of trains, including the Mendipathar–Guwahati–Mendipathar (55619/55620) and Rangiya–Dekargaon–Rangiya (55821/55822).
- Alipurduar Division: 6 pairs of trains, such as the Malda Town–Balurghat–Malda Town (55421/55422) and Alipurduar Jn.–Bamanhat–Alipurduar Jn. (55465/55466).
- Katihar Division: 21 pairs of trains, including the Katihar–Radhikapur–Katihar (55727/55728) and Katihar–Siliguri Jn.–Katihar (75743/75744).
