Indian Railways has launched a digital application process for Divyangjan Passengers Smart Cards, simplifying the procedure for persons with disabilities to obtain concessional rail tickets. Initially introduced as a pilot project in Mumbai, Secunderabad, and Chennai divisions, the initiative has now been extended to other zonal railways, including the Northeast Frontier (N.F.) Railway.
The new system allows individuals with visual impairments, hearing and speech disabilities, mental challenges, or orthopaedic handicaps to apply for or renew their photo ID cards online. The portal, accessible at divyangjanid.indianrail.gov.in, offers a user-friendly interface and a detailed manual to guide applicants through the process.
Previously, Divyangjan passengers were required to submit applications in person or by post at Divisional Railway Offices. The process involved manual verification of documents, often requiring applicants to wait in long queues. This system posed significant challenges, particularly for those with disabilities.

The new online platform eliminates the need for in-person visits. Applicants can now complete the process digitally, track the status of their application, and download the digital ID card upon approval. This streamlined approach is designed to make the procedure more accessible and less time-consuming.
Divyangjan Smart Card holders can book concessional reserved tickets at railway ticket counters or through the IRCTC website. For unreserved tickets, passengers can use either the ticket counters or the UTS mobile app.
N.F. Railway has encouraged all eligible passengers to utilise this online service, which aims to improve convenience and accessibility for persons with disabilities.
