India has made remarkable progress in drone technology over the past six years, according to Surveyor General of India, Hitesh Kumar Makwana. Speaking at a workshop in Bhopal on Monday, Makwana highlighted the Central government’s comprehensive drone policy, aimed at promoting the widespread use of this transformative technology.
Drones, once seen as limited-use devices, have now evolved into versatile tools with applications across various sectors. Makwana emphasised that drones are much more than flying cameras, describing them as “game-changing technology” capable of delivering services at multiple levels. He noted the government’s focus on creating a robust ecosystem for drone technology, with clearly defined rules, licensing procedures, and operational guidelines to support its growth.
Makwana pointed out the potential for drones to significantly enhance service delivery in states, offering improved facilities for citizens. He underlined the government’s efforts to develop a framework that supports the widespread adoption of drone technology in various fields.
“This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India,” Makwana said, referencing the Central government’s push for self-reliance and domestic manufacturing.
During the workshop held at Bhopal’s Kushabhau Thakre auditorium, Makwana commended Madhya Pradesh for its strides in using drone technology. He highlighted the state’s achievement in deploying drones for implementing the Swamitva Yojana, a scheme aimed at mapping rural properties to establish clear ownership.
“Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a leading state in drone technology. This efficient, accessible, and cost-effective technology has positioned the state as a pioneer in its practical application,” he added.

Sanjay Dubey, Additional Chief Secretary of Science and Technology, discussed the state’s efforts to advance drone technology. He announced plans to establish drone manufacturing units, with the process already underway.
Dubey emphasised the importance of drones as a future necessity rather than an optional tool. “We are working to create a strong and holistic ecosystem for drones in Madhya Pradesh, ensuring their practical and beneficial use at the regional level,” he said.
The workshop also marked the launch of a drone-centric information portal. This platform aims to integrate information on drone technology, policies, and training, serving as a resource for stakeholders interested in this emerging field.
