Rafael Nadal, one of the most celebrated figures in tennis history, played his final professional match on Tuesday as Spain was defeated by the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-finals. The 38-year-old, who boasts 22 Grand Slam titles, lost in the opening singles rubber. Despite Carlos Alcaraz levelling the tie, the Netherlands secured a 2-1 victory in the deciding doubles match, marking the end of an era for the Spanish icon.
Nadal faced Botic van de Zandschulp in his farewell singles encounter but was defeated 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz kept Spanish hopes alive by beating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7/0), 6-3, but Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof triumphed in the doubles, winning 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/3), to send the Netherlands into the semi-finals against either Canada or Germany.
Nadal’s participation in the tie was uncertain, given his ongoing struggle with injuries and lack of match play since July. However, Spain’s captain, David Ferrer, confirmed Nadal would feature in the first singles rubber, providing fans with a final opportunity to see him compete.

The Mallorcan legend was visibly moved during the national anthem, as chants of “Rafa, Rafa” reverberated through the packed arena of over 10,000 supporters.
Reflecting on the moment, Nadal said, “I was having an emotional day, nerves before what could be my last singles match as a professional. The emotions hearing the national anthem for the last time as a professional were very special.”
Nadal leaves the Davis Cup with a near-perfect singles record, having won 29 out of 30 matches since his debut in 2004.
