Agartala: Tripura Left Front, a conglomerate of four political parties, on Saturday took to the streets of Agartala showing solidarity towards ‘persecuted’ religious and ethnic minorities of Bangladesh.
The Left Front leaders appealed to the interim government in Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of the minorities in Bangladesh.
“A government can’t play the role of a silent bystander in such cases. A big determinant factor of whether democracy exists or not in a country is the condition of the minorities living there. From this rally, the Tripura Left Front committee wants to appeal to Bangladesh’s interim government to take effective steps in controlling the situation,” former Chief Minister and CPIM politburo member Manik Sarkar has said.
Recalling the influx of Chakma refugees in South Tripura district after the formation of first BNP government in Bangladesh, Sarkar said, “When the first BNP government was installed in Bangladesh, thousands of Chakma refugees took shelter in Tripura fleeing ethnic violence in Bangladesh. The Left Front government led by former Chief Minister late Nripen Chakraborty stood beside them. The Government of India also endorsed the stand of the state government. After the fall of the BNP in Bangladesh, all those returned to Bangladesh. The then governments of both the countries facilitated their safe return.”

The senior CPIM leader also appealed to the people living in Tripura to be watchful of elements making efforts to create divide in religious lines taking advantage of what had been happening in Bangladesh.
“Some elements are actively trying to strike at the foundations of peace and tranquillity, an ingrained feature of our society. We all should make sure that during the festive season, these forces should be kept at bay,” added Sarkar.
