In a significant development, a special court in Mumbai has denied the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) request to halt the broadcast of an upcoming documentary series on Indrani Mukerjea, a prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.
The court presided over by CBI special judge S P Naik-Nimbalkar, ruled that it lacks the “inherent power” to intervene and prevent the airing of the documentary titled ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth’. The judge further advised the CBI to seek redressal from an appropriate forum if deemed necessary.
The prosecution failed to present any legal basis for such an injunction, prompting the judge’s decision. The docu-series, set to premiere on Netflix on February 23, delves into the mysterious disappearance of 25-year-old Sheena Bora and her subsequent murder.
In its application, the CBI had requested the court to issue directions to the accused and related individuals to refrain from featuring in the documentary or allowing its broadcast on any platform until the ongoing trial concludes.
The case dates back to April 2012 when Sheena Bora, Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter from a previous relationship, was allegedly strangled to death by Indrani, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and former husband Sanjeev Khanna. Bora’s body was later cremated in a forest in the neighbouring Raigad district.

The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai confessed to the crime during his arrest in another case. Indrani was subsequently apprehended in August 2015 and granted bail in May 2022. The other accused in the case, Rai, Khanna, and Peter Mukerjea, have also been released on bail.
