Imphal: Indigenous people across Manipur staged a ‘war cry’ demonstration on Friday evening, expressing anger and disappointment over the prolonged crisis and demanding swift government action to restore peace and normalcy.

Organised by the Federation of Haomee (FoH), the statewide demonstration was held from 7.30 pm to 8 pm, with people from various indigenous communities participating.

People came out of their homes to beat traditional drums, raise slogans, honk vehicles, bang utensils and strike electric poles. The demonstration reflected public frustration over the continuing violence, civilian killings and displacement, as well as the demand for a lasting solution to the crisis.

Kangla Fort in Imphal was the main focal point of the protest, where hundreds gathered to express their anger and helplessness over the continuing violence. Police fired tear gas as tensions mounted at the site. No injuries were reported.

The protesters raised several demands, including the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki armed groups, and identification of illegal immigrants in the state.

The crisis in Manipur, which is approaching its fourth year, has severely disrupted normal life and education while inflicting economic losses.
