Kohima: The Nagaland State Election Commission (SEC) has announced fresh elections to three wards under different town councils following casual vacancies.
The fresh polls will be held in Ward 11 (Chaara) of Chümoukedima Town Council, Ward 8 (Tsumang B) of Wokha Town Council, and Ward 9 (Samba Ghoki) of Atoizu Town Council.
According to the SEC, the elections are being conducted under Section 30 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, following vacancies notified by the government through notifications dated February 6 and March 30, 2026.
The state government, through a letter issued on April 15, 2026, conveyed administrative approval for conducting elections to the three unreserved wards.
Exercising powers under Rule 20 read with Rule 81 of the Nagaland Municipal Election Rules, 2023, the Commission notified the election schedule on Friday.
The election programme will begin with the publication of the notification on May 15, 2026. Filing of nominations will take place from May 25 to May 29 up to 3 pm, while the list of validly presented nomination papers will be published on May 30.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on June 1. Applications seeking revision of scrutiny orders can be filed on June 2 and June 3 up to 3 pm, and such applications will be decided on June 4.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 5 up to 3 pm. The final list of contesting candidates and polling stations will be published later the same day after 3 pm.
Polling will be held on June 16 between 7:30 am and 4 pm. In case of any re-poll, it will be conducted on June 18. Counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on June 19 from 8 am onwards at the designated counting centres.
The Commission further informed that the electoral roll published on April 12, 2024, under Rule 10 of the Nagaland Municipal Election Rules, 2023, will be used for the elections.

The SEC also stated that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into immediate effect in the jurisdictions of Chümoukedima, Wokha, and Atoizu town councils following the announcement of the election programme.
The MCC will remain in force until completion of the election process and will apply to candidates, political parties, and the state government within the poll-bound areas.
