Nagaland: Landslides raise concern at Govt Polytechnic Doyang campus

Kohima: Multiple landslides triggered by recent heavy rainfall have raised serious safety concerns at the campus of Government Polytechnic Doyang in Wokha district, with residents alerting that several buildings could be at risk if further rain occurs.

At least eight major landslides were reported along the campus perimeter following intense rainfall from April 19, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Three buildings are at high risk of sliding down in case of another heavy downpour. Other structures are also vulnerable,” the source said, adding that landslides had also affected the institute’s main approach road at multiple points.

Sources said ongoing road-cutting work under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), which began in January below the campus area, has heightened concerns following the recent rainfall.

The campus, located near the Doyang River and surrounded by water on three sides, remains vulnerable to further slope instability, the source added.

Despite the situation, normal classes are continuing at the institute, where most students and faculty reside on campus.

Residents said anxiety is growing over the possibility of further rainfall.

“Everyone is aware of the situation. People are panicking because if more rain comes, the buildings could collapse and our lives may be in danger,” the source said.

The issue has reportedly been flagged to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), but no responses were received.

Government Polytechnic Doyang, established in March 2021 under the Department of Higher and Technical Education and affiliated with the State Council for Technical Education (SCTE), currently offers a three-year diploma course in Architecture Assistantship.

The institute is located near Pangti village, close to the well-known roosting site of the migratory Amur Falcon and adjacent to the Doyang hydro project area.
