Dibrugarh: At least 10 people from Assam are reportedly missing following devastating flash floods in Nepal, according to a list released by the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ADMA).
The list initially identified 12 people from Assam who were stranded or missing in flood-hit areas. Two were subsequently rescued by the Nepal Air Force, leaving 10 people unaccounted for.
Among those missing are three residents of Karbi Anglong — Rhituopurno Brahma, Montri Basumatary and Soneswar Narzary of Daidak village under Dokmoka Police Station. The three reportedly travelled to Nepal around two weeks ago in search of employment.
Others on the list include Rahul Daimary of Golaghat, Shatadal Nath of Hojai, Arun Mahanta and Dr Tirtha Chaliha of Nalbari, and three residents of Guwahati — Dr Dipali Sarkar, Pankaj Naug and Manash Kunar Ghosh.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government was aware of people from Assam stranded in Nepal and was in touch with their families while coordinating with relevant agencies for their safety and return.
In a separate post on X, Sarma said the government had so far established details of 12 people from Assam who remained untraced in Nepal and that efforts were underway to establish contact with them and facilitate their safe rescue.
Meanwhile, the disappearance of Rahul Daimari, a resident of Jaipukhuri village in Merapani, has left his family deeply distressed. Rahul was reportedly working for a pipeline company, Andrex, in Nepal and is suspected to have been swept away by floodwaters in the Trishuli Khola area of Nuwakot district.
According to his family, Rahul had previously worked in Bhutan and was recently transferred to Nepal. He returned home following the death of his father and left for Nepal again on August 14 after completing the funeral rituals.
The family reportedly learned of his disappearance after his name appeared on the Assam government’s list of missing persons. They said neither his company nor the Nepal government had so far provided information about his whereabouts.
Another missing person, Shatadal Nath, is from Hindu Block village in Doboka, Hojai district. He reportedly travelled to Nepal for work around eight months ago with his colleague Gautam Das.
According to Shatadal’s neighbour, Sumit Das, the two were working in the Trishuli area. Shatadal spoke to his family on Tuesday and was reportedly online around 3 am. Gautam Das, who was not in the room when the disaster struck, was later rescued by the Nepal Air Force.
Sumit said he contacted the company’s supervisor, who reportedly told him that he had no information about Shatadal’s whereabouts and would inform the family if any information became available.
The Nuwakot district of central Nepal was among the areas severely affected by the recent flash floods.
