Nagaland govt notifies reconstitution of village councils

Kohima: The Government of Nagaland has initiated the process for the reconstitution of village councils across recognised villages in the state for the 2026–2031 tenure.

According to a government notification, the tenure of the present village councils will end in the coming months. In pursuance of Chapter I, Section 6(a) of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, all recognised villages have been asked to select new members for the next tenure.

The notification issued by Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha stated that the deputy commissioners of respective districts, in accordance with Rule 3 of the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Rules, 1979, will issue detailed notifications to recognised villages under their jurisdiction within 15 days, directing them to initiate the process for selecting new village council members for the 2026–2031 tenure in line with prevailing customary practices and usages.

It further stated that the entire process of selecting new village council members must be completed before April 31, 2026. The proposed list of members of the newly constituted village councils must then be submitted to the state government through the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland for approval by May 5, 2026.
