Golden Grain Initiative promotes millets for nutrition and sustainability in Nagaland

The North-Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) hosted an awareness event on October 28 in Dimapur under its “Golden Grain Initiative,” promoting millet consumption as a means to boost health and agricultural sustainability in Nagaland. Organised at Zone Naithu by the Park, this initiative aims to educate the public on the benefits of millets, encouraging greater consumption and thereby driving production among local farmers.

Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Retd), Managing Director of NERAMAC, welcomed attendees from the Nagaland Agriculture Department, as well as farmers and entrepreneurs, emphasizing the nutritional advantages of millets as a vital alternative to rice. He noted that NERAMAC has been dedicated to advancing the millet sector in India, contributing to the global recognition of 2023 as the International Year of Millets. “Millet is a true ‘superfood,’ and we’re committed to making India’s Golden Grain a household staple,” Ashok stated, highlighting the efforts of both NERAMAC and the Nagaland government to popularise this crop and foster a healthier tomorrow.

Chief Guest at the event, Shri S Yongchang Phom, Additional Director of Agriculture for the Government of Nagaland, spoke on the traditional role of millets in ancestral diets and the importance of preserving and promoting this crop for food security, agri-diversity, and its nutritional value. Phom acknowledged NERAMAC’s efforts in spearheading the push for greater millet consumption and reaffirmed the government’s support for initiatives enhancing local agricultural resilience and nutritional health.
