Dimapur: The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has called for swift action to improve infrastructure and services in Dimapur following the formation of urban local bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland after nearly two decades.
The DCCI expressed optimism that the newly installed municipal councils, particularly the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), will address longstanding issues in the city.
In a statement, DCCI President Akashe Zhimomi acknowledged the efforts of the Nagaland government, led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, for successfully implementing the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023. Zhimomi noted that the business community sees the new law as a “ray of hope for the development of our much-neglected cities and towns.”
Dimapur, often regarded as Nagaland’s commercial hub, plays a vital role in the state’s economy. However, according to the DCCI, the city deserves better infrastructure, including well-maintained roads, uninterrupted power supply, functional streetlights, and efficient waste management systems. Zhimomi also highlighted the need for improved drainage systems and installation of CCTV in key areas to enhance security and civic services.
Despite being one of the state’s highest taxpayers and providing employment opportunities to local youth, the business community in Dimapur has faced inadequate infrastructure and a lack of government support, the DCCI noted. The chamber criticized what it called “stepmotherly treatment” by the state government, claiming that it has failed to provide basic amenities and an enabling environment for trade and commerce in Dimapur.
In addition, the DCCI reminded the business community to strictly adhere to the notification issued by the Municipal Affairs Department on November 16, 2021, which directed that the “collection of any kind of taxes/fees on items/goods under the Goods & Services Tax (GST) regime shall be immediately stopped by all Municipal and Town Councils across the State of Nagaland.”
