New Delhi: Mizoram Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana attended the national observance of International Literacy Day 2026 as a guest of honour at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi on September 8, where Mizoram was recognised among states and Union Territories that have declared themselves fully literate.
The programme was chaired by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, with education ministers from fully literate states and UTs invited as guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, Vanlalthlana highlighted the Mizoram government’s efforts to raise literacy levels and said the state was the first in India to declare itself fully literate.
Citing the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey Annual Report, he said Mizoram has a literacy rate of 99.8%.
The minister said the state government was continuing efforts to retain Mizoram’s position as India’s highest-literacy state in the 2027 Census through the Rapid Action for Eradication of Residual Illiteracy Project (RAERIP) and the Centre’s ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) programme.
Vanlalthlana credited churches, civil society organisations, teachers and students for their contribution to Mizoram’s literacy achievements.
He also highlighted skill-development initiatives under the Critical Life Skills and Occupational Skill Development Programme, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. According to the minister, 634 people had completed training under the programme as of 2026.
The 60th International Literacy Day was observed globally this year under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.”
