Aizawl: Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena has accused Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma of misleading the Assembly regarding the alleged prohibition on planting areca nut crops in India. The accusation stems from a statement made by the Chief Minister during a recent assembly session, where he reportedly claimed that the central government had prohibited the planting of areca nut.
In response to the Chief Minister’s statement, MP Vanlalvena said that he met Union Minister of Agriculture, Shivraj Kumar Chouhan, in his office on September 13, 2024, to clarify the situation. During the meeting, Vanlalvena raised concerns about the alleged ban, explaining that farmers were dismayed by the news and urging the central government to rescind any such order.
According to Vanlalvena, Minister Chouhan denied that the central government had issued any directive prohibiting the planting of areca nut crops. To further confirm the information, Vanlalvena said he spoke with Prabhat Kumar, Commissioner of Horticulture, on September 20, 2024, who also affirmed that no such ban had been imposed.
In light of these developments, Vanlalvena has assured farmers that they can continue planting areca nut crops without concern, emphasizing that there is no government order prohibiting the cultivation of areca nut.
The conflicting statements have sparked political tension, with Vanlalvena urging the Chief Minister to clarify his remarks and assure the public that farmers are not restricted from planting areca nut crops. The incident has raised concerns about the accuracy of information being communicated to the public and the impact such statements may have on the livelihoods of farmers in the state.
