Aizawl: In a shocking incident, two doctors from Synod Hospital and their friend were brutally assaulted by a group of young men on the night of September 21-22, 2024, at Durtlang Leitan in Aizawl. The victims, Dr. Laldinliana Sailo of Zemabawk North, Aizawl, Dr. Rinngheta Renthlei of Durtlang, and their friend Lalthlamuana, were attacked due to an alleged misunderstanding.
According to a police complaint filed by Dr. Laldinliana Sailo, the attack occurred between 11:00 PM and midnight. The assailants forcefully dragged the three men out of their vehicle, violently assaulting them. Dr. Rinngheta Renthlei was thrown to the ground, repeatedly kicked in the head, and had his shirt torn apart. The victims sustained serious injuries to their heads and faces.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and seized evidence, including the torn t-shirt of Dr. Rinngheta. All three victims were medically examined at Synod Hospital, where it was confirmed that Dr. Laldinliana Sailo and Dr. Rinngheta had sustained grievous injuries, while Lalthlamuana had suffered a simpler injury.
Six suspects were arrested by the police on September 23, 2024. The accused, identified as Lalmalsawma Zote (25), Mark Zairemmawia (24), Lalvenpuia (22), Sailianpuia Sailo (28), Vanlalpekhlua (23), and K. Vanlaltharzela (23), all hail from Ramhlun North. Despite the gravity of the attack, they were released on bail as the offense was deemed bailable. One of the accused, Sailianpuia Sailo, is a police constable posted at Sairang Police Station under Aizawl DEF. He has since been placed under suspension following disciplinary proceedings.
The incident has sparked outrage in the medical community, with the Synod Hospital Doctors and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mizoram Branch, strongly condemning the attack. Both organizations have demanded a magisterial inquiry into the assault, calling for accountability and justice for the victims.
In a disturbing development, it was revealed that on September 23, 2024, a police constable named Lalruatdika, who came to Synod Hospital to collect the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) injury report, allegedly harassed the victims. According to statements made by the Synod Hospital Doctors and the Durtlang Branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Lalruatdika threatened the victims, warning them that if they did not forgive the police constable involved in the attack, worse things could happen to them, as the constable was “a dangerous man.”
This threat has been widely condemned as an act of intimidation against the victims and a disrespectful attack on the medical profession and the institution itself. The Synod Hospital Doctors and the YMA have called for immediate action against Constable Lalruatdika, demanding that justice be served without bias or intimidation.
