Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma chaired a crucial meeting on Monday with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) to deliberate on a comprehensive roadmap for eradicating drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, and senior officials from various departments were also in attendance.
The meeting focused on a three-pronged approach involving law enforcement led by the police department, harm reduction managed by the Health Department, and social security measures overseen by the Social Welfare Department. Discussions revolved around structural and functional changes within the ANTF, the proposed drug eradication strategy, and the support required from various departments, including Law, Health, Education, and Social Welfare.
Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the need for a holistic and phased approach to tackling the drug menace, proposing the formulation of short-term, medium-term, and long-term action plans. “The scope of the ANTF is immense and vast, so it would be practical and sensible to first leverage the low-hanging fruits and implement the strategy as pilot projects in certain hotbeds of the drug menace in the state,” he remarked.
Sangma highlighted the dual approach needed to address the problem. “While there should be zero tolerance by law enforcement on the supply and distribution of drugs, the humane side—focused on users, their rehabilitation, health, and societal reintegration—must be handled effectively by the Health and Social Welfare departments,” he added.
The Chief Minister also underscored the role of the Education Department in creating awareness and sensitizing the youth about the dangers of drug abuse.
Key areas of discussion included the establishment of testing, detoxification, and rehabilitation centers, as well as strategies to dismantle the drug supply chain in the state.
The meeting marks a significant step in Meghalaya’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking. With a multi-departmental strategy in place, the state aims to address the issue comprehensively, balancing stringent law enforcement with compassionate rehabilitation measures.
