Shillong: A case has been registered against Meghalaya DGP Lajja Ram Bishnoi by the state police. This action follows an FIR filed by suspended cop GK Iangrai, accusing Bishnoi of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and cheating.

“We have received an FIR filed by GK Iangrai MPS. The FIR alleges that the Director General of Meghalaya Police has a vehicle which he uses in an official capacity, and it does not have a suitable number plate. Based on the FIR, we are registering a case, and the investigation will be initiated,” informed East Khasi Hills SP, Rituraj Ravi.

In the FIR filed at Sadar police station, Iangrai stated that an enquiry committee was constituted on 18th July 2022. The committee’s report revealed that a Hyundai Verna parked at the Central Workshop was allotted a fake number plate, and no registration of the vehicle was done by AIG-A, as no documents are available.

He further stated that, according to a letter obtained under the Right to Information (RTI), the vehicle, Hyundai Verna 1.6 VTVT, is registered with the Transport Department, Government of Meghalaya, Shillong, as ML-02-A-0001, in the name of the Director General of Police, Government of Meghalaya, Shillong.

“The information obtained under the RTI by the Transport Department Government of Meghalaya refutes the report of the Inquiry Committee, necessitating action against the committee members,” he added.

He alleged that Lajja Ram Bishnoi arrived in Shillong to assume his post on 17th May 2022, in a white Kia Carnival Limousine with a registration from the Government of Assam. However, it appears that Bishnoi, in an act of criminal conspiracy, changed the vehicle’s number plate to ML-02-A-0001, which is registered for the aforementioned Hyundai Verna.

“It has been learned that the white Kia Carnival Limousine is a requisitioned vehicle, but Bishnoi is using it for personal purposes, as evident from photographs of his presence in the vehicle,” he added.

He further stated, “As per the Rules and Standard Guidelines, the Director General of Police, Government of Meghalaya, Shillong, is entitled to use a vehicle within the range of Rs.12,00,000/= (Rupees Twelve Lakhs) only, while the said vehicle costs almost Rs. 40,00,000/=(Rupees Forty Lakhs) only, which the Director General of Police is not entitled to.”

“All these facts point only to the Offence of Criminal Conspiracy, Criminal Breach of Trust, as well as Forgery and Cheating committed by Lajja Ram Bishnoi. I, therefore, request you to register a case against the accused persons mentioned above under the appropriate Sections of the Law and prosecute him accordingly to ensure that he is punished for the same,” he concluded.

He also enclosed the photographs and the RTI letter.
