In what is being described as one of the largest cash seizures in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding District, Rs 1 crore was confiscated from an SUV following Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP President Conrad K Sangma’s convoy at the Kanubari check post in Longding district. Sangma, who also serves as the NPP national president, was en route to Arunachal Pradesh to campaign for party candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 and assembly polls.
The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on April 4th.
In response to the news, the NPP Meghalaya spokesperson Hima Shangpliang promptly issued a clarification, refuting any association with the party’s leader.
Shangpliang’s statement reads, “Firstly, we categorically state that the vehicle in question was not a part of our convoy, which was certified officially by the SP of Longding area.
Secondly, our convoy, including the vehicles carrying our National President, underwent standard security checks as per the protocols established during the election code of conduct. No irregularities were detected during these procedures,” clarified the NPP state spokesperson.
Furthermore, Shangpliang added, during the checking of vehicles at Kanubari check gate by the FST, SST and police, our party vehicles were thoroughly checked including that of our National President, National General Secretary and the team accompanying our president. The police vehicles were also thoroughly checked and nothing was found.
“We were not aware of the incident involving the aforementioned vehicle until it was reported in the media. Our party was blindsided by the news, and any attempt to link this incident with our National President is baseless and without merit,” mentioned Shangpliang in his statement.
The owner of the SUV from which the cash was seized is Harshvardhan Singh, Executive Director of Badri Rai & Construction Ltd.
Badri Rai is an Assam based construction firm which has been awarded several top-notch projects by the NPP-led MDA Government, including the much-awaited Assembly building project at Mawdiangdiang and the commercial complex project at Polo.
