Imphal: Chief Minister N Biren Singh has emphasized the significant role of the people of Senapati, especially Civil Society Organisations like the Naga People’s Organisation, United Naga Council, and student associations, in maintaining Manipur’s unity, integrity, and the peaceful coexistence of its indigenous population. Speaking on Wednesday, he sought the support and cooperation of all indigenous and recognized communities in the State to restore normalcy and peace.

The Chief Minister addressed the gathering as the Chief Guest during the inaugural function of the RobvenaNi 2024 festival held at the Asufii Robvena Ground in Punanamei Village, Senapati District. CM Biren Singh inaugurated the three-day festival by lighting the ceremonial fire at the venue.

Acknowledging the challenges the State has faced over the past 19 months, Singh said the situation is gradually improving by God’s grace. He praised the festival’s theme of reconciliation among individuals and groups, stating it is a much-needed concept globally and within Manipur. “Humans are bound to make mistakes, but reconciliation, forgiveness, and dialogue are essential to move forward,” he stated.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of mutual respect and inclusive development, asserting that peace and unity in Manipur depend on these principles. Singh highlighted the government’s Go to Hills initiative as part of its commitment to balanced development in both the hills and the valley, aiming for a transformative impact on the region.

Singh stated that the initiative has been 70-80% successful, citing key developmental projects in Senapati District such as the Indigenous Sports Complex, the District Youth Skilling, Entrepreneurship & Employment Centre, the installation of astro turfs, and the nearing completion of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT). He also mentioned plans to install advanced medical facilities like MRI and CT scan equipment in hill districts, including Senapati, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, and Chandel.

Highlighting infrastructural improvements, Singh said the State has seen significant progress in road connectivity. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently announced ₹777 crore for the improvement and widening of the Shangshak (Ukhrul) to Tengnoupal road. Singh also assured that the Maram-Peren Road would be completed soon and noted the improved condition of the Khongshang to Tamenglong road stretch.

Touching upon the War on Drugs campaign launched in 2018, Singh reiterated that it aims to safeguard present and future generations and is not directed against any community. He also discussed efforts to identify illegal immigrants through satellite mapping and constitutional provisions, noting that the indigenous tribes’ populations are small and require protection.

The Chief Minister acknowledged misunderstandings and unfortunate events that have led to loss of lives and property but called for unity to overcome these challenges. He sought the support of Senapati’s people in restoring peace and normalcy.

Singh announced plans for a Unity Mall in Imphal East, which will house stalls representing every recognized tribe. He also highlighted unique features of Senapati, such as the multi-storey car parking facility, which is not even available in Imphal. However, he noted the lack of land resources in Senapati District and the need to expand Senapati Town to accommodate population growth and infrastructure development.

The Chief Minister extended warm Christmas greetings to the people and encouraged continued community efforts toward peace and progress.

Losii Dikho, MLA of Mao Assembly Constituency and chief host of the event, welcomed the gathering and provided historical insights into the Robvena community. The descendants of ancestor Robveo, who first settled at Robvedzü (Punanamei), now comprise three villages: Robvemai, Robve Chobongho (Chowainu), and Robve Solephe. Dikho highlighted the community’s contributions to education and religion, describing the festival as a celebration of their collective identity.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam and other dignitaries, visited 21 exhibition stalls showcasing handlooms, handicrafts, organic vegetables, and food items.

The RobvenaNi 2024 festival continues to serve as a platform for fostering unity, reconciliation, and cultural celebration in Manipur.
