Churachandpur community leaders oppose CRPF replacing of Assam Rifles

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations and local community representatives from Churachandpur has voiced strong opposition to the government’s decision to replace the 9 Assam Rifles Battalion with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the district. The statement emphasises the critical role the Assam Rifles have played as a neutral force in maintaining peace between conflicting communities.

The Assam Rifles, with their extensive experience and deep understanding of local dynamics, have been instrumental in preserving stability in the region. Their knowledge of cultural sensitivities and the complex socio-political landscape has been pivotal in preventing violence and fostering a peaceful environment. The Civil Society Organizations assert that replacing this seasoned battalion with the CRPF, which lacks similar local expertise, is a strategic misstep that could destabilise the area.

Concerns have been raised over the appointment of CRPF Deputy Inspector General (Operations), Premjit Huidrom, a member of the Meitei community. The local populace questions the ability of the CRPF under his leadership to remain impartial and ensure the safety of all communities in the district and the state.

The Civil Society Organizations warn that removing the Assam Rifles could lead to a breakdown of the fragile peace and jeopardise the safety of residents. They urge the government to reconsider the decision, stressChurachandpur Community Leaders Oppose CRPF Replacement of Assam Riflesing that the Assam Rifles have earned the trust and respect of the local people through their unbiased efforts.
