Guwahati: The All Manipur Beekeepers’ Association (AMBA) marked World Bee Day 2024 with a vibrant celebration at their office in Khundrakpam Awang Leikai Mamang Ching.
The event, themed “Bee Engaged with Youth,” focused on the crucial role of bees in the ecosystem and the necessity of involving the younger generation in beekeeping and pollinator conservation efforts.
The ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Maibam Rina Devi, a social activist from Khundrakpam, and distinguished Guests of Honour, including President of Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, organic expert and agriculturist Thokchom Biren, apiary warrior Worthing Horam from New Tusom, Ukhrul District, and Secretary of the Rural Area Development Organisation (RADO) Saikhom Premjit.
The event was presided over by a national awardee in beekeeping and the Secretary of AMBA, who shared the importance of bees and the myriad challenges they face.
W. Dinamani, Treasurer of AMBA, kicked off the program with a welcome address, followed by a keynote speech from Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Secretary of AMBA. Dr. Singh elaborated on the historical significance and current importance of beekeeping, highlighting that bees are responsible for pollinating one-third of the food we consume, thus supporting biodiversity and agriculture. He also noted the numerous threats to bees, such as habitat loss, climate change, pesticides, and diseases.
Chief Guest Maibam Rina Devi delivered urged the need for community support in conservation efforts and the essential role bees play in maintaining ecological balance. Other notable speakers, including President of AIMS Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, emphasised the economic significance of bees, especially in the pollination of crucial crops.
Thokchom Biren shared insights on innovative and sustainable beekeeping practices, focusing on organic farming techniques and habitat restoration.

Worthing Horam spoke about his deep passion for nature and the importance of beekeeping, while Saikhom Premjit stressed community engagement and education to foster a culture of conservation and environmental stewardship.
A poignant part of the event was Dr. Singh’s address on the ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has had a devastating impact on bee farmers. He described the severe consequences, including loss of life, displacement, and significant property damage, including to bee farms. Dr. Singh highlighted AMBA’s efforts to support affected beekeepers and mitigate these challenges.
