Nine teachers from the Northeast have been selected for the National Teachers’ Award 2025, which will be presented on Teachers’ Day. This year, 66 teachers across the country have been chosen for the award, including 45 from schools and 21 from higher education institutions.
Among the recipients is Assam’s Debajit Ghosh from Namsang TE Model School, located on the Assam–Arunachal border. Ghosh has been recognised for his initiatives that improved both learning outcomes and student well-being in the tea garden community.
In June 2023, he organised a science exhibition in collaboration with VSSE SAC and ISRO, which sparked interest in science among students and helped reduce absenteeism. He also requested a health camp, which revealed widespread undernutrition. Following this, he ensured green leafy vegetables and supplements were introduced into the PM-POSHAN programme, improving the haemoglobin levels of 165 children.
The interventions, officials said, contributed to a rise in HSLC results from 78% to 90%, while students also began participating more in sports and cultural competitions. His efforts focused not only on academic performance but also on physical fitness and emotional well-being.
After receiving the award in New Delhi, Ghosh expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying that it was a privilege to represent a school from the Namsang Tea Estate on the national platform. He also highlighted the need for Physical Instructors in model schools, noting the enthusiasm of students towards sports and physical activities.
Alongside Ghosh, several other teachers from the Northeast have also been honoured. From Arunachal Pradesh, the recipients are Nang Ekthani Mounglang of Government Secondary School Pachin in Papum Pare and Proshanto Kumar Saha of Rajiv Gandhi University, also in Papum Pare. Nagaland’s awardee is Peleno Petenilhu of John Government Higher Secondary School in Viswema, Kohima. Manipur is represented by Koijam Machasana of Ghari Upper Primary School in Imphal West. From Sikkim, the award has gone to Karma Tempo Ethenpa of PM Shri Mangan Senior Secondary School, Mangan. Meghalaya’s recipient is Heipor Uni Bang of K.B. Memorial Secondary School in Wapung, East Jaintia Hills. Tripura is represented by Bidisha Majumder of Hariananda English Medium Higher Secondary School in Gomati. From Mizoram, the award has gone to Zoramdinthara of Mizoram University.
