A timely alert by a railway track worker helped avert a potential danger to train operations in the Lumding–Badarpur hill section of Assam, prompting recognition from senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
On the morning of 23 June 2025, Akshay Raj, a Track Maintainer posted under the Senior Section Engineer for P-Way at New Harangajao in Lumding Division, was on duty as a stationary watchman near kilometre marker 108/6–7. While monitoring the area, he observed soil and boulders slipping down the left retaining wall and entering the side drain next to the tracks near KM 108/7–8.
Understanding the potential risk to trains, Akshay Raj responded without delay. He notified the Junior Engineer in charge of P-Way at Jatinga Lampur and also informed members of Gang Nos. 23 and 24. He then followed the prescribed safety procedure by securing the affected track section using a banner flag, which signals obstruction or danger on the line.
The early intervention allowed the railway authorities to carry out precautionary measures in time, possibly preventing a serious incident.
In recognition of his swift action, Akshay Raj was formally acknowledged by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway. During the felicitation, the General Manager praised the track maintainer’s vigilance and described it as an example of the critical role played by on-ground staff in ensuring railway safety.
He also encouraged all railway employees to maintain a high level of alertness in the course of their duties and to respond promptly to any signs of potential disruption, especially in sensitive terrain such as hill sections. According to the General Manager, the dedication shown by workers like Akshay Raj reflects the core values of railway service and helps maintain trust in the system’s safety.
