The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has put in place a range of measures to accommodate the large number of devotees travelling to Guwahati for the annual Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya temple. The preparations are aimed at easing passenger movement and improving overall services during one of the region’s most significant religious gatherings.
To manage the increased volume of passengers, special ticket counters have been set up at both Kamakhya and Guwahati railway stations. These counters are operational 24 hours a day to help devotees secure tickets efficiently and minimise waiting times.
In support of the visiting pilgrims, the Northeast Frontier Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (NFRWWO), under the leadership of Shalini Shrivastava, has initiated food and water distribution services. Packets of cooked meals and bottled water are being provided to ensure basic needs are met during the event.
In terms of train operations, NFR has announced additional services to clear the Ambubachi rush. One of the temporary additions includes a daily unreserved train between Guwahati and Alipurduar Junction. Train No. 05672 will depart from Guwahati at 7:25 PM from 22 to 26 June and arrive at Alipurduar at 4:00 AM the following day. The return leg, Train No. 05671, will leave Alipurduar Junction at 8:00 AM from 23 to 27 June and reach Guwahati by 4:20 PM.
An unreserved service between Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri has also been scheduled. Train No. 05698 will leave Guwahati at 11:55 PM on 26 June and arrive in New Jalpaiguri at 8:15 AM the next day. The return trip, Train No. 05697, is set to depart New Jalpaiguri at 11:15 AM on 27 June and reach Guwahati by 7:30 PM the same day.
To maintain order and assist with crowd control, additional personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been deployed. Extra commercial and technical staff are also present at major stations to support passengers. Help desks and information booths have been set up to address queries and offer guidance.
